Covering politics is no easy feat. Capturing the political players and their personalities in cartoon form — and making it funny to both Democrats and Republicans — can be even tougher.
But political cartoonist Jack Ohman has been excelling at it for decades, earning a Pulitzer Prize while at the Sacramento Bee for capturing the essence of politicians in a state that has produced some of the nation’s most dynamic power players (see his takes of Nancy Pelosi, Kevin McCarthy and Gavin Newsom above.)
Ohman is a California institution himself, and while he was let go last year from his longtime perch at the Bee, he landed at the San Francisco Chronicle and has his cartoons of everyone from Taylor Swift to Donald Trump to reprinted in newspapers nationwide
.For our next ENLIGHTENMENT salon, Ohman joins us on the sofa at Ruhstaller’s basement taproom to talk about his career and take your questions about cartooning, journalism, politics, his thoughts on Trump, Harris, Election 2024 and more.
