Hi, it’s Vanessa, your ENLIGHTENMENT host, and in this crazy time of federal layoffs, and state workers getting the RTO call, I’ve planned this month’s Philosophy Café to be about employment, jobs, and how to find meaning, worth and reward in yours.
We have philosophy professors from CSU Sacramento on the sofa to talk with us about how the definition and tasks of work have changed over the years. For example, we used to make things, but now our work is a job where we do mostly one thing. Also, technology has reduced the number of hours needed for us to do tasks. If that keeps going, what will we do when we don’t have to do anything? And how will we feel about it?
This will be an interactive conversation, so you’ll be asking the professors your questions. Then we’ll talk amongst ourselves about the meaning, purpose and value of work and having a job, and how we can benefit from those insights financially, professionally and mentally.
OUR GUESTS
Kyle Swan, professor of philosophy, and director of the Center for Practical and Professional Ethics at CSU Sacramento
